An Introduction to Simple Salad Recipes

The world of salads is a huge one. There are literally thousands of different ingredient combinations you can make, to produce different salads. Perhaps you have a favorite macaroni salad recipe, tuna salad recipe or spinach salad recipe already or maybe you are a novice when it comes to making this type of dish.

Most salads are really easy to prepare because there is not much heating or cooking involved (often none at all) and salads can be very quick to put together if you have all your ingredients ready.

Different Types of Salads

Although there is a broad range of salad recipes, you will find that certain salads go well alongside meat, fish, or poultry recipes, some are better as appetizers and others are tasty enough to be served alone, as the main course. A ham salad recipe or egg salad recipe can make a delicious light lunch but a seafood salad recipe with homemade salad dressing is exquisite enough for a dinner party entree.

Some salads are very basic and contain just four or five different ingredients and others have a bit more to them, perhaps using cooked meat or fish. There are also grain salads made with rice, pasta, quinoa, or couscous and these can make a great side dish because you only have to make the salad; you do not have to make rice or pasta and an additional salad on the side.

Shopping for the Best Salad Ingredients

Most salads feature vegetables and in order to give your salad the best flavor it is important to use fresh produce wherever possible. Some things will have to be fresh, such as the lettuce and tomatoes, but others might be canned or frozen. Some canned or frozen ingredients are very similar to fresh ones and others are very different.

You might think a tuna salad recipe with corn is going to taste similar whether you use frozen or canned corn (and you would be right), but would you thaw strawberries to make a strawberry spinach salad? Thawed fruit is fine to use in jello or smoothies but its mushy appearance would not look very good in a salad. When it doubt, use fresh ingredients for superior results.

Traditional Salads and Modern Ones

Most people have tasted tuna nicoise, Caesar salad, or Greek salad but not everyone has tried more unusual ones like strawberry spinach salad or fruity summer salads. Traditional salads are a popular choice in restaurants because when you order one you know exactly what you are going to get.

It is different when you make your own salad recipes though because you get to choose exactly what goes into it. You can choose your ingredients, colors, textures and whether you are going to make a chopped salad, a layered one, or a tossed salad.

You might choose to use international vegetables or exotic spices to add a unique flavor to your simple salad recipes or you might like to keep the salad simple and make an exciting homemade salad dressing to go with it. You can be as creative as you like when making salads, experimenting with different flavors, textures, and colors to make the salad as delicious as possible.

Free Recipe for Spinach Salad:

Strawberry Spinach Salad with Pecans

The following recipe for strawberry spinach salad combines the sweetness of strawberries with the crunch of pecans and the tart flavor of green apples. The sour cream-based dressing goes really well with the different flavors and textures in the salad. This recipe could be served as an appetizer or lunch and it is colorful as well as delicious. You can serve it alone or on a bed of salad leaves (perhaps you would like to choose a pale green lettuce, for a good color contrast with the dark green spinach).

This is a great way to use up fruit and you can swap the sour cream dressing for an oil and citrus one if you prefer. Some people like the creaminess of a sour cream or mayonnaise-based homemade salad dressing recipe and others prefer the astringency of something with lemon juice or lime juice, as well as perhaps oil and vinegar. It is up to you which you go for. Try using walnuts instead of pecans if you like them more, or exchange the apple for cheese or hard-boiled egg. Apples go brown when the flesh is exposed so you can either soak the chopped apple in lime juice or lemon juice or make the salad immediately before serving it.

Maybe you have used spinach and strawberries to make tasty salads before or perhaps you are more accustomed to making potato salad, chicken salad recipes, or your favorite tuna salad recipe. Whatever the case, there is no doubt the following recipe is healthy, nutritious and really flavorful, as well as simple to prepare. You will need to chop the fruit, lightly toast the pecan halves if they are not already done and tear up the spinach. It goes without saying you should use fresh spinach for this recipe. Frozen spinach is for cooking, not using in spinach salad recipes.

Spinach Salad Recipe with Strawberries

A Closer Look at Salad Recipes

Learning how to make salad recipes means you will always be able to put together a delicious appetizer, side dish, or main course. There are salads for every palate and since many salads do not require any cooking or baking, they can be fast and easy to put together. There are literally thousands of different variations.

How Easy Can Salad Recipes Be?

You can make a nice salad with as few as three or four ingredients. Perhaps you want to use mayonnaise to make a nice salad to fill sandwiches, in which case you can combine the mayonnaise with shrimp, egg, tuna, or another ingredient, as well as some salt and black pepper or other herbs or seasonings.

Another way to make a salad is to chop all your favorite vegetables and toss everything together. You can either serve this kind of salad with some dressing on the side or you can toss the salad with dressing before serving it.

How to Serve Salad Recipes

Serve a small portion of salad as an appetizer or side dish, or a larger portion as your entrée. A salad can be as large or small as you like. If you are making salad for a buffet, you can double or triple most salad recipes. Something with pasta or macaroni might be economic if you are feeding a crowd, and many salads can be made in advance and kept in the refrigerator in a covered container until required.

If you are making a salad for the family, you can serve it in a serving bowl and let people serve themselves. It is nice to serve salad on chilled plates, and chilling them is easy. You just need to refrigerate them for ten minutes or so.

If you are serving something hot, like a steak, for example, with a chilled salad, then you might like to serve the salad on a chilled side plate and the steak (and fries or other hot side dishes) on the main plate, else you have to serve the salad on a hot plate or the steak on a cold plate.

Why Salad Recipes are So Popular

There are so many salad recipes, each containing a different combination of ingredients, that there really is something for everybody. There is no single ingredient which every salad recipe has to contain, and there are so many variables as well. Salads can be warm or chilled, they can be smooth or crunchy, and they can be creamy, sharp, or even spicy. A salad might feature fish, seafood, or meat, or it might be vegetarian or even vegan. A salad might be hearty, featuring ingredients like rice, pasta, or noodles, or it might be light and refreshing.

This enormous range of possibilities is one of the main reasons why salad recipes are so well loved. Everyone has a favorite salad recipe and you can leave the ingredients you do not like out, and make sure your favorite ingredients are in. For instance, if you are not a fan of salad leaves, there are plenty of salads which do not require them. If you do not like mayonnaise or creamy dressings, you can make a simple vinaigrette instead, or another kind of salad dressing.

There are famous salad recipes like Caesar salad, Cobb salad, tuna niçoise, Waldorf salad, and more, and there are lesser known (but still just as delicious) salad recipes. Some people even like to make up their own salad recipes, combining various ingredients from the refrigerator and cupboards, to offer a balanced flavor.
